A History of Decorating for the Holidays

"Rockin' around the Christmas tree, in the new old-fashioned way..."
~ Johnny Marks and Brenda Lee

Whilst spending a chilled out, festive day with my family decorating the house and getting ready for Christmas (a while ago now seeing as I became sick when writing this) I started to wonder why we decorate Christmas trees, do they have a specific meaning?

Christmas trees are typically evergreens decorated with lights, tinsel and baubles.

However, before Christianity evergreens had a special meaning to people during the winter. This is because ancient people believed that hanging boughs of evergreen above the door (kind of like when we hang a wreath on the door), would protect them from witches, ghosts, evil spirits and illness. In addition to this, evergreen boughs reminded them of all the green plants that would eventually grow again when summer returns. Similarly the Egyptians filled their homes with green palm rushes which symbolized for them the triumph of life over death.
Modern Christmas trees came from Germany, but these trees were decorated with candles (not at all a fire safety hazard!!).

Sorry this is only a short blog post but I promise there will be more soon. And yes I am aware I said I was going to do a blog post about Hygge, it is a work in progress.

For now let me know about any unique holiday decorations you have, in the comments below.

I hope you have a Merry Christmas! Just generally a happy holiday whatever you are doing.
